On Monday night, in East Lansing, Michigan at Michigan State University, police responded to an active shooter situation that has left three people dead and five others injured.
Police confirm that the suspect has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the area of Lake Lansing Road and Larch Street in Lansing, about 4 miles away from the MSU Union.
The suspect is a 43-year-old man who is not affiliated with MSU, and police are still working to determine the suspect’s identity and possible motive.
At about 8:18 p.m., Monday 911 received multiple calls of shots fired in Berkey Hall in the northern boundary of the Michigan State University campus. Multiple victims were located at this location.
Police then received a report of another shooting and responded to the MSU Union building, where they found additional victims.
Two of the fatalities were at Berkey Hall and one was at the MSU Union building.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Detroit division and FBI were on the scene assisting local law enforcement and campus police.
MSU Police and Public safety tweeted “All campus activities are canceled for 48 hours, including athletics, classes, and all campus-related activities. Please DO NOT come to campus tomorrow.”
The Spartans men’s and women’s basketball teams were off Monday night, but the men’s team was scheduled to host Minnesota on Wednesday, and the Michigan State men’s tennis team was scheduled to host Drake on Wednesday.
The next media briefing will take place at 8 a.m. at the Henry Center for Executive Development.
